How are you feeling? I mean, really? Are you in touch with the sensations that change from moment to moment? Take a moment to answer these few queries:
- Are you feeling hot, cold, warm?
- Are you feeling heavy or light?
- Can you count the number of your heart beats in one minute?
- Are you truly hungry, comfortably full, or satiated?
- Are you feeling calm or agitated?
- Is your breath quiet or with sound?
- Are you feeling rested or tired?
Was it easy or challenging to answer these questions?
The answer depends upon how much we are in touch with the internal state of our body and our being. The ability to be able to correctly infer these signs is called interoception.
Why do we have weak interoception?
Due to over consumption of the mind and awareness in what is going on in the outside world, we discount the internal process. At times we are not even aware of this superpower of ours, which in Yoga is acknowledged when we ask, “Are you self-aware?”
Why is it important?
Well for starters, we will be mindful of:
- what is compatible and what is not for the body (food)
- what works and what does not for the mind (relationships)
- what benefits and what does not for self (Yoga practice)
So, how does one build interoception?
Yoga Nidra is one of the most unique practices in Yoga that is geared towards self-awareness, self-assessment, and self-realization. Even the most basic practice of Yoga Nidra brings the gift of awareness, which on its highest level promises the state of Yoga itself—Samadhi.
