Debunking the Top 3 Myths of Shavasana

'I love a little nap after all the asana.' 'I can't stand being still so long!' 'It's literally the reason I go to Yoga class.' 'I leave before, I don't have time for lying around after I've done my practice!' Like Yoga itself, shavasana evokes a different idea, feeling, or explanation depending on who you talk to. From an athletic cool-down to a modified Yoga Nidra, shavasana sounds like a veritable shape-shifter! Myths abound when it comes to this essential practice. Here are just a few:

  1. Myth #1 It's just a pose.
Fact: Shavasana is a pilgrimage to the most-still point within the self, a preparation for end of life as an everyday ritual, a practice of detachment.
  2. Myth #2 It's the shorter version of Yoga Nidra.
Fact: Shavasana is a totally different practice from Yoga Nidra. For starters, Shavasana is a bridge between pranayama and meditation, whereas Yoga Nidra is a bridge between meditation and Samadhi
  3. Myth #3 Skip it, it's not necessary.
Fact: Shavasana is one of the most important practices in Yoga. There is no denying that we are an overstimulated and under-rested generation. We require rest, sensory relaxation, and sleep. Shavasana is essential to prepare us for all of them.

Shavasana is a bridge between physical and subtle practices that can lead to the state of Yoga. With such a pivotal role, we must avoid reducing this important practice to an optional afterthought or spa-night experience. There is so much more to unlock with the potent practice of shavasana.
